Engineer-Led 3D Laser Scanning for Mine Sites: A Second Technical Set of Eyes on the Plant Mining operations increasingly use terrestrial LiDAR scanning to capture conveyors, transfer stations, processing equipment, structural steel and other existing infrastructure. But there can be an important difference between sending a scanning technician to site and sending an engineer equipped with professional 3D scanning tools . The scanner may be collecting millions of measurable three-dimensional points, but the engineer operating it is also looking at the plant from an engineering perspective. They are considering how the equipment works. They are looking at the interfaces between mechanical equipment and structures. They are considering access, maintenance, guarding, services, installation constraints and how the plant appears to have changed over its operating life. In practical terms, an engineer-led scanning visit can provide mine operators with something beyond a point cloud: another ...
